EXTRA NOTES

A pyrimidinemonocarboxylic that is orotic acid which is substituted by fluorine at position 5. It is used in yeast molecular genetics to detect expression of the URA3 gene, which encodes orotine-5'-monophosphate dicarboxylase. A yeast with and active URA3 gene converts 5-fluoroorotic acid to fluorodeoxyuridine, which is toxic to cells.[ChEBI]

APPLICATION:5-Fluoroorotic Acid is a selective agent in yeast genetics such as identification of mutant yeast strains, yeast 2-hybrid system and gene replacement. It isolates orotidine-5'-monophosphate decarboxylase gene (pyrF).

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OROTIC ACID: Orotic acid: Uracil-6-carboxylic acid, is an intermediate in the metabolism of pyrimidine nucleotides. Naturally occurring derivatives are components of nucleic acids: cytosine, thymidine, and uracil).
Orotidine: a nucleoside, orotic acid N1 is linked to the C1 of ribose.
Orotidine 5'-phosphate: an intermediate in pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis. They are used as a cosmetic ingredient, in medicine, as a feed supplement and in biochemical research.
