Application: Methyl β-D-glucopyranoside has been used in a study to assess alternansucrase acceptor reactions with methyl hexopyranosides. It has also been used in a study to investigate the specificity of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in removing carbohydrates by fermentation.

Local:
Glycoside is a compound that contains a sugar (carbohydrate) molecule which are convertible into sugar (called glycone) and a nonsugar component (called aglycon or genin) by hydrolytic cleavage. The glycone can consist of a monosaccharide (single sugar component) or oligosaccharide (several sugar groups). Glycosides play important roles in living organisms, and thus numerous natural glycosides are studied for medication applications. Glucoside is a glycoside in which the sugar constituent is glucose. Pentoside and fructoside are glycosides in which the sugar constituents are pentose and fructose respectively. Alkyl glycosides are used as initiators in the manufacture of rigid polyurethane foams. Alkyl glycosides are also widely used in the synthesis of surfactants. Methyl polyethoxylated glucosides are effective humectants and viscosity modifiers with low irritant and silky feeling on the skin. They are recommended for use in both rinse and skin care products such as lotions, creams, shampoo, and body cleanser. Methyl-a-D-glucopyranoside is a component of emulsifier applied for personal care products, skin creams, lotions and other cosmetics, particularly for leave on skin care systems to reduce tacky feel and synergistic humectancy  performance.
