GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATIONS

Benzyl Chloride, chlorinated toluene, is a clear to yellowish liquid; melts at -39 C; boils at 179 C. It reacts vigorously with strong oxidants and water to produce hydrogen chloride. Its oxidation reaction produce benzaldehyde. It attacks many metals except nickel and lead in the presence of water. Benzyl Chloride is widely used as an intermediate for manufacturing organic compounds including benzyl alcohol, benzyl cyanide and other benzyl compounds used in the end applications of perfumery, dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic resins, photographic chemicals, warfare chemicals, penicillins, quaternary ammonium compounds, plasticizer and esters. It is used in fuel as a gum inhibitor.

3,4-Dichlorobenzyl chloride, dichloro-substitued benzyl chloride at 3 and 4 positions, is a clear to yellowish liquid with chlorine like odor; boils at 241 C; insoluble in water but readily soluble in most organic solvents. It is used as an intermediate in the production of a number of products, including agricultural chemicals, dyes and pigments and pharmaceuticals. Dichlorobenzyl chloride isomers are:
  • 2,3-Dichlorobenzyl chloride (CAS RN: 3290-01-5)
  • 2,4-Dichlorobenzyl chloride (CAS RN: 94-99-5)
  • 2,5-Dichlorobenzyl chloride (CAS RN: 2745-49-5)
  • 2,6-Dichlorobenzyl chloride (CAS RN: 2014-83-7)
  • 3,4-Dichlorobenzyl chloride (CAS RN: 102-47-6)
  • 3,5-Dichlorobenzyl chloride (CAS RN: 3290-06-0)
  • Dichlorobenzyl chloride (CAS RN: 38721-71-0, mixture)
