DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATIONS

Thiophosgene is a toxic yellow liquid; boiling point 75 C. The formula CSCl2 with a trigonal planar geometry. It has two chloride atoms and a thio bond in the shortest chain which makes this reagent the diverse procedures in organic synthesis. Thiophosgene, a thio analog of phosgene, is a very reactive chemical intermediate which reacts with nitrogen (pri-, sec-, tert- amines, imines, amides, hydrazines, azo, and azide), oxygen (alcohols, phenols, lactones, and oximes), sulfur (thiols and thiolactones), carbon, and metallic and Inorganic compounds. Thiophosgene can convert primary amines into isothiocyanates.
