GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

2,3-Benzofuran (1-Oxindene) is a clear to slightly greenish liquid ; boils at 173C. It is an oxygen-containing heterocyclic organic compound fused to benzene ring. It is obtained from coal tar distillation. Benzofuran can be prepared by O-alkylation of salicylaldehyde with chloroacetic acid followed by dehydration of the resulting ether. In another method called the "Perkin rearrangement" a coumarin is reacted with an hydroxide Benzofuran is rarely used for any commercial purposes. Rather, the principal industrial use of benzofuran is in the production of thermoplastic resins called coumarone-indene resin. This resin resists corrosion and is used to make paints and adhesives, and rubber compounds.. The resin also provides water resistance and is used in coatings on paper products and fabrics. It is used as an adhesive in food containers and is in some asphalt floor tiles.
  • Indene is an analog without the oxygen atom.
  • Indole is an analog with a nitrogen instead of the oxygen atom.
  • Furan is an analog without the fused benzene ring
  • Aurone contains a benzofuran ring linked with benzylidene at position 2.
  • Dibenzofuran has two benzene rings fused to one furan ring in the middle.
