APPLICATIONS
|
Bromoform, a haloform, is used as a solvent for waxes, greases, and oils.
Haloform is prepared when most compounds containing the formula RCHO(H)CH3
(where R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group) such as acetone, acetaldehyde
and alcohols are treated with sodium (or potassium) hydroxide and halogen.
Bromoform is used as an ingredient in fire resistant chemicals and in fluid
gauges. It is also used as an intermediate in manufacturing agrochemical and
organic synthesis. It is also used as a polymerization agent, as a sedative, and
as a cough suppression agent in medical field. Bromoform is a heavy liquid used for the
separation of minerals having higher and lower specific gravities than the
liquids or for determination of specific gravity of mineral particles. Another
example is methylene iodide. |
