GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Gum benzoin is a a balsamic resin with an aromatic odor and taste obtained from various pleasantly scented plant mainly from species of Styrax. It is completely different from organic compound benzoin, a highly toxic substance with formula of  C6H5CH(OH)COC6H5. It does not contain benzoin but benzoic acid, resin acids, esters, terpenes, and oxidative or polymerized terpenes. Sometimes benzoic acid is called 'flower of benzoin'. Gum benzoin is used in in perfumes, some kinds of incense, and medicine for the functions as a topical skin protectant, antiseptic, irritant expectorant and inhalant.  in respiratory tract inflammation. It is also called benzoin resin, benzoinam and gum benjamin. (FEMA No. 2133)
