Local:
Oxindole is the oxidized indole at 2 position. Isatin is the di-oxidized derivative of indol at 2 and 3 positions. The oxidized indole at 3 position is indoxyl which are oxidized further to indigo dye in air. Indican is a glucoside of indoxyl; found in the indigo plant. In biochemistry indican refers to the indoxylsulfate found in urine by bacteria action on tryptophan. Traditionally indole derivatives are important raw materials for dyestuffs. They are lactam structure compounds which are important in antibiotics. There cyclic ester structures are present in many alkaloids, auxins and flavorings (jasmine). They also show not only psychotropic activity but anticonvulsive activity. Some indolyl and indoxyl derivatives which produce insoluble indigo precipitates are used as chromogenic enzyme substrates for clinical diagnostics application environmental testing. They are used as biological dyes to stain certain cell components for cell analysis.
