CLASSIFICATION

Phytochemical, Antioxidant, Analgesic, Anti-Inflammatory, Enzyme Inhibitor, Phenylpropanoid

EXTRA NOTES

A potent lipoxygenase inhibitor that interferes with arachidonic acid metabolism. The compound also inhibits formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase, carboxylesterase, and cyclooxygenase to a lesser extent. It also serves as an antioxidant in fats and oils. [MeSH]

Local
Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid is used to prevent formation of eicosanoids, prostaglandins, thromboxanes, hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid and various leukotrienes. It combines with lipoxygenase or cyclooxygenase and thereby serves as a lipoxygenase or cyclooxygenase inhibitor which prevent the substrate-enzyme combination with arachidonic acid. Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid is also known as an antioxidant which inhibit or retard the oxidation of a substance. It also used as an antioxidant in fats and oils.
