GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Muconic acid, chemically 2,4-hexadienedioic acid, is an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid which has two double bonds, with chemical formula HOOCCH=CHCH=CHCOOH. It is an analogue of sorbic acid, 2,4-hexadienoic acid which is characterized by the broad effectiveness to inhibit molds, yeast, and many bacteria growth. There are three isomers of muconic acid (trans-trans form is common which can be obtained by the condensation reaction of glyoxal and malonic acid in the presence of pyridine). trans-trans-Muconic acid is a white powder melting at 297 C; insoluble in water, soluble in hot acetic acid and alcohol. It decomposes at the melting point. The melting point of cis,cis-muconic acid and cis-trans-muconic acid are 194 C and 190 C respectively. cis, cis-Muconic acid is soluble in hot water( but insoluble in ether). trans,trans-muconic acid is a ring-opened metabolite of benzene and is used for the indicator of an occupational benzene exposure. Members of muconic acid related products include:
