APPLICATIONS

Cathartics promote or encourage defecation by accelerating the passage of feces through the large intestine, by influencing the consistency and amount of stool, and by facilitating the elimination of feces from the rectum. The terms laxative and cathartic reflect the typical intensity and latency of effect. A cathartic usually produces prompt fluid evacuation, while a laxative usually produces a soft formed stool over a protracted period. Cathartics or laxatives can be classified as belows:

  • Bulk-forming agents
    • Psyllium
    • Methylcellulose
    • Polycarbophils
  • Osmotics
    • Saline
    • Cleansing laxative
      • Polyethylene glycol
    • Hyperosmolar laxative
      • Lactulose
      • Sorbitol
      • Glycerin suppositories
  • Stimulants
    • Cascara
    • Sennosides
    • Phenolphthalein
    • Bisacodyl
    • Casanthranol
    • Aloe Vera
    • Castor Oil
  • Stool softener
    • Docusate Calcium
    • Docusate Sodium
    • Docusate Potassium
  • Lubricants/Emollients
    • Mineral oils

Bisacodyl is a contact laxative used for short-term relief of constipation and to clean out the intestinal tract for bowel examination or surgery; administered orally or by rectal suppository. Chemically it is described as 4,4'-(2-Pyridylmethylene) bis(phenyl acetate). The complex of bisacodyl and tannic acid is soluble in water; administered as a cathartic.
