GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Pyran is a heterocyclic compound  of six-membered diunsaturated ring structure composed of five carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. The ring is the basis of the pyranoses' cyclic or ring structures. The term of pyran also indicate six membered cyclic ether (also called oxane); three membered cyclic ether is called epoxide (or oxirane); four membered cyclic ether, oxetane; five membered cyclic ether, furan (or oxolane) respectively. Their unhindered oxygen atom carries two unshared pairs of electrons - a structure which favors the formation of coordination complexes and the solvation of cations. Cyclic ethers are used as important solvents, as chemical intermediate and as monomer for ring-opening polymerization. They are unstable at room temperature due to possibility of peroxide formation; stabilizer is sometimes needed for storage and transportation. Dihydropyran, cyclic vinyl ether, is a clear, flammable liquid; boiling point 86 C. It is an useful reagent for OH-protecting. It is used in the synthesis of bicyclic compounds of epoxide-fused, halo compounds and allenic alcohols ( containing allenic group, -CH=C=CH-).
