GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Fluoxetine is a drug of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) which interferes with serotonin ((chemically 5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) transport, used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), eating disorders, and social phobias. Examples of SSRI include Fluoxetine (Prozac, Fontex), Paroxetine (Paxil, Seroxat), Sertraline (Zoloft), Escitalopram Oxalate (Lexapro), Citalopram (Celexa), Fluvoxamine Maleate (Luvox), Bupropion (Wellbutrin). SSRIs have been increasingly replacing cyclic antidepressants which have been the most common antidepressants due to less side effects and to minimize suicide attempt. Examples of tricyclic antidepressants include Amitriptyline (Elavil,Endep), Clomipramine (Anafranil), Desipramine (Norpramin, Pertofrane), Doxepin (Adapin, Sinequan), Imipramine (Tofranil), Nortryptyline (Pamelor), Protriptyline (Vivactil), Trimipramine (Surmontil)  and tetracyclic antidepressant is Maprotiline (Ludiomil).
