APPLICATIONS |
||
Calcium ions are needed for electrical activity for the contraction of
cardiac and smooth muscle and conduction of nerve cell. Calcium channel blocker
is a drug which inhibits the entry of excess calcium into cells and/or prevents
form the mobilization of calcium from intracellular stores, resulting in
relaxation of blood vessel walls and cardiac muscle for blood to flow more
freely, lowering blood pressure thereby reducing oxygen demand in the heart and
relieving anginal pain. It is used in the treatment of angina, cardiac
arrhythmias, and hypertension.

Nitrendipine is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. The chemical structure is related with nifedipine but nitro griop is at meta position. It is characterized in the peripheral circulation, reducing both systolic and diastolic pressures. The chemical designation is 1,4-Dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-4-(meta-nitrophenyl)-3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic aicd, ethyl methyl ester. It is a yellow crystalline powder; insoluble in water , slightly soluble in methanol; soluble in chloroform and acetone; melting point 156 - 160 C; administered orally. |
