GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Reserpine is an indolalkylamine alkaloid obtained from the root of Rauwolfia serpentina or R. vomitoria, found in India and Africa. It  is used as an antihypertensive in combination with other medicines to treat high blood pressure. It binds to neurotransmitters (such as norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine) resulting in catecholamine depletion in the body. It has veterinary application as a long acting tranquilizer. It is a yellowish crystalline powder; melting point 270 C; insoluble in water and ether; soluble in alcohol, acetone; freely soluble in acetic acid, chloroform. It's chemcial designation is (3beta,16beta,17alpha,18beta,20alpha)-11,17-dimethoxy- 18-[(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl)oxy] yohimban-16-carboxylic acid methyl ester. Yohimban is a parent structure of alkaloid. Yohimbine is another indolalkylamine alkaloid similar to reserpine. It is obtained from from Rubaceae, Apocynaceae, and their related trees.Indole alkaloids found in yohimbe extract include yohimbines (alpha-, beta-, allo-, dihydrated), ajamalicin, corynanthein, dihydrated corynanthein, and corynanthin (rauhinbin). Yohimbine is a white crystalline powder; odorless; sparingly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol and  chloroform. The chemcial designation is 17-hydroxy-yohimban-16- carboxylic acid, methyl ester. Yohimbine has activity of a weak blocker of alpha-adrenergic receptor.  It is used in arteriosclerosis and angina pectoris, and has been used as a local anesthetic and mydriatic and for its purported aphrodisiac properties.
