GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Bicalutamide is capable of inhibiting the biological effects of male sex hormones (androgens). Antiandrogens are sometimes used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Bicalutamide is used for therapy of prostatic carcinoma, in combination with measures to lower testosterone levels; administered orally. Only R-enantiomer of bicalutamide is antiandrogenically active; the S-enantiomer is inactive. But commercial bicalutamide is a racemate. The chemical designation is N-[4-cyano-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]- 3-(4-fluorophenyl)sulfonyl-2- hydroxy-2-methyl- propanamide. Bicalutamide is a white to off-white powder, practically insoluble in water.
