GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Prostaglandin is any of a group of components derived from unsaturated C-20 fatty acids, primarily arachidonic acid (most natural prostaglandins have two double bonds). Prostaglandins synthesized in the cells act in cells and surrounding cells. The actions and effects vary with concentration, hormonal environment, and types of cells, affecting the nervous system, circulation, female reproductive organs, and metabolism. They are found in highest concentrations in normal human semen. Prostaglandin compounds are designated by adding a letter to indicate the type of ring structure and a numerical subscript to indicate the number of double bonds in the hydrocarbon skeleton.

Cloprostenol is a synthetic prostaglandin F2alpha analog which show powerful luteolytic effects and is used for the synchronization of estrus in veterinary medicine. prostaglandin F2alpha analog also stimulates the contraction of uterine and bronchial smooth muscle and produces vasoconstriction in some vessels. Cloprostenol sodium  is a white or off-white hygroscopic powder; freely soluble in water and alcohol. In IUPAC Cloprostenol is (Z)-7-[(1R,3R,5S)-2-[(E,3R)-4-(3-chlorophenoxy)-3-hydroxybut-1-enyl]-3,5- dihydroxycyclopentyl] hept-5-enoic acid.
