GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Losartan works by preventing the action of a hormone called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to narrow, and leads to production of another hormone called aldosterone (which increases the amount of fluid in the blood). The action of losartan results in widening of blood vessels and reduction of fluid in the blood, and therefore brings about a reduction in blood pressure. (source: http://www.patient.co.uk/)

Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of a stroke. It may be used alone or in combination with other agents. Losartan is in a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. These type of medications work by preventing the constriction (narrowing) of blood vessels (veins and arteries). Losartan was the first angiotensin II receptor antagonist to be marketed. It is currently marketed by Merck & Co. under the brand name Cozaar®. (source: http://www.losartan.com/)

Losartan potassium, a non-peptide molecule, is chemically described as 2-butyl-4-chloro-1-(p -(o-1H -tetrazol-5-ylphenyl)benzyl)imidazole-5-methanol monopotassium salt. Losartan potassium is a white to off-white free-flowing crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 461.01. It is freely soluble in water, soluble in alcohols, and slightly soluble in common organic solvents, such as acetonitrile and methyl ethyl ketone. Oxidation of the 5-hydroxymethyl group on the imidazole ring results in the active metabolite of losartan. (source: http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/)
