GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Hydroxylamine is a white crystalline compound containing nitrogen with the formula of NH2OH and is therefore an ammonia (NH3) like compound. It is used as a powerful reducing agent in organic synthesis. It converts aldehydes (and ketones) to oximes (caprolactam), and acid chlorides to hydroxamic acids. Hydroxylamine tends to be explosive when heated. Its derivatives in the form of salts are more stable to be used and handled. O- alkylated hydroxylamines are used in the preparation of O-alkyl oximes and O-alkyl hydroxamates which are intermedaites for the production of antibiotics and oxime herbicides. Examples of end products are cefuroxime (antibacterial), alloxydim, butroxydim, clethodim, cloproxydim, cycloxydim, profoxydim, sethoxydim, tepraloxydim, and tralkoxydim. O-methylhydroxylamine is an useful intermedaite to produce pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. It is used in the stereoselective reduction of ketones. It is used as a reagent for the protection and derivatization of keto-groups of steroids particularly. It is used to detect sugars and amino sugars in glycoproteins.
