GENERAL
DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS
|
Thiouracil,
a thiourea
derivative, is the basic structure of several drugs used to treat hyperthyroidism.
They It inhibit the synthesis of the thyroid hormones
produced by the thyroid gland. They are used as antithyroid, coronary vasodilator, and in congestive heart failure.
Thiouracil is replaced by other drugs as it is known to cause blood
dyscrasias and suspected of terato- and carcinogenesis. In industry thiouracil
is used in galvanization as a grain refining agent.
Some derivatives of uracils, pyrimidines, thiazolines,
and organodisulfides are used as grain refining agents in plating.
