APPLICATIONS |
||
Naphthoquinone is the fundamental ring structure that is related with vitamin K activity, which can be formed by addition of long side chain substituents. Vitamin K1(also called phytonadione or phylloquinone) is a naphthoquinone compound with phytyl side chain and methyl group at 3 and 2 position respectively. A naphthoquinone compound with prenyl units side cnain at 3 position and methyl group at 2 position is Vitamin K2 (also called menaquinone). Menadione is a synthetic provitamin K (called Vitamin K3) which has substituted methyl group only at 2 position on naphthoquinone ring. Vitamin K is essential to promote blood clotting factors including prothrombin, playing a role in a carboxylation reaction when glutamates converted to g-carboxyglutamates. In industrial field, naphthoquinone is used as a rubber (and polyester resins) polymerization regulator. It is used as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and pesticides. It is used as an antimycotic agent. | ||
