APPLICATIONS |
|||
Bipyridine is an organic heterocyclic compound containing two pyridine rings
connected at one carbon site on each ring, with general formula C10H8N2. Each
rings contain tri-unsaturated six-membered ring of five carbon atoms and one
nitrogen atom. Bipyridine is a white solid slightly soluble in water and soluble
in organic solvents. Six isomers of the simplest bipyridine exist. The rules of
nomenclature would indicate the position of N atoms in the ring. Bipyridine
molecules are coordinated as chelate ligands to form a complex with a transition
metal ion. Bipyridines are involved in photosensitizer chemistry, luminescent
materials, and metal complex chemistry. Bipyridines can be used in:
Some bipyridinium molecules, quaternary ammonium compounds, are active ingredients of contact herbicides with non-selective and fast-acting properties. They are poisonous to humans also. They are readily reduced to radical ion which reacts with unsaturated membrane lipids. Pyridinium class plant protection products include cyperquat, diethamquat, difenzoquat, diquat and morfamquat. Amrinone and milrinone, bipyridine ketone derivatives, are positive inotropic cardiotonic agents with vasodilator effects. They are phosphodiesterase inhibitor that prevents enzymatic breakdown of cyclic AMP by phosphodiesterase. They stimulate calcium ion influx into the cardiac cell. Etoricoxib, a bipyridine non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, is a COX-2 selective inhibitor.
