Anabasine is a pyridine alkaloid originally found in Nicotiana glauca plant. It is structurally related to nicotine which is found in Nicotiana tabacum plant. Anabasine and nicotine related  compounds have been used as botanical insecticides. Anabasine is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist. It can cause a depolarizing block of nerve transmission which is similar to nicotine poisoning. Anabasine also can be used as an indicator of an exposure to tobacco smoke.
