APPLICATIONS

Alizarin is a red coloring mordant dye containing hydxoyanthraquinone structure with metal chelation; obtained originally from the root of the madder plant; now synthetic alizarin are prepared from coal tar derivatives. Alizarin is chemically 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone. The chelated metals result in deeply colored fabric and the brilliant dye colors; rose-red shades with aluminium, reds with calcium and tin, and brownish red with chromium, dark violet with iron and blue with barium. Alizarin compounds are used as indicators. Sodium alizarinsulfonate, commonly called alizarin red S is a yellow or orange to brown powder; soluble in water; used as a stain in microscopy, as a reagent for aluminum, as an acid-base indicator, and in the determination of fluorine.
