GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
||
3-Chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium
chloride is used in the cationization of starch, cellulose
and related compounds. It is used as
an additive for paper and textile. It is used in manufacturing
surfactants.
In the wet part of the papermaking process, generally called the “wet-end”, the starches used are cationic and have a positive charge bound to the starch polymer. These starch derivatives associate with the anionic or negatively charged paper fibers / cellulose and inorganic fillers. Cationic starches together with other retention and internal sizing agent help to give the necessary strength properties to the paper web to be formed in the papermaking process (wet strength), and to provide strength to the final paper sheet (dry strength). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starch) Amphoteric starches have been used as wet-end and size-press papermaking additives by aid in retention, drainage and strength properties. They can also be used as ceiling tile additives, drilling fluid additives, viscosity modifiers and agents in ore recovery operations[1].In recent years ,the synthesis and application of new amphoteric starches has become an active area of research. This is due to their advantageous properties which cationic starches or anionic starches can,t compare with them in some cases, ecological tolerance and potential applications in paper, fiber, oilfield and wastewater treatment industry.
