GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
||
Safrole is a clear to pale yellow oily liquid; toxic, insoluble in water, glycerol; slightly soluble in propylene glycol; soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, and chloroform. It is a constituent of several essential oils such as sassafras oil and camphorwood oils. It has a topical antiseptic property. It is carcinogenic to the liver is no longer used in foods. It is used as a flavoring agent in soap and perfumes. It is used in the manufacture of heliotropin (piperonal) to use in medicine, perfumes, suntan preparations, and mosquito repellents. It is used as a preservative, an antiseptic agent and an intermediate. Safrole is used as the main precursor for the manufacture of ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methamphetamine), a semisynthetic recreational drug. Safrole is listed as a Table I precursor under the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. Safrole is a precursor in the synthesis of the pesticide synergist such as piperonyl butoxide. It has the dioxole heterocyclic ring structure. Examples of dioxole compound include: | ||
