GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Nelfinavir is a protease inhibitor which prevent viral replication by inhibiting the activity of protease. Protease inhibitors inhibit HIV-1 and HIV-2 proteases and cause the formation of noninfectious immature viral particles. Protease inhibitors (PIs) are a class of antiretroviral drugs used to treat or prevent infection by viruses, including HIV and Hepatitis C. Reverse transcriptase inhibitors are antiretroviral agents also that blocks activity of the reverse transcriptase of a retrovirus. Every retrovirus has a reverse transcriptase enzyme which transcribes the genetic information from its RNA into DNA.  Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme that  can transcribe RNA into DNA to copy genetic information from RNA to DNA, therefore also called RNA-directed DNA polymerase. Nelfinavir mesylate (ester) is the prodrug of nelfinavir; administered orally. Nelfinavir mesylate is a white to off-white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, soluble in lower alcohol (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and propylene glycol). The chemical designation is (3S,4aS,8aS)-N-(1,1-Dimethylethyl) decahydro-2-[(2R,3R)-2- hydroxy-3-[(3-hydroxy- 2-methylbenzoyl) amino]-4-(phenylthio) butyl]-3-isoquinolinecarboxamide monomethanesulfonate.
