Ionone
is a member of terpene, naturally occurring unsaturated hydrocarbons whose carbon
skeletons are composed exclusively of isoprene C5 units
(CH2=C(CH3)-CH=CH2), consisting of five
carbon atoms attached to eight hydrogen atoms (C5H8). The stepwise
distillation with water and carbonates yields terpenes. Ionone
is a clear to yellowish liquid; boiling point 126 -
128 C at 12 mmHg; soluble in alcohol, ether, and mineral
oil. It is used
is used in perfumery, flavoring, and vitamin A (retinol) production
for cosmetics and toiletries. beta isomer
shows
a less floral odour than the alpha.
It has good substantivity and is used in all areas of perfumery. (Olfactive Note: Floral, Woody, Raspberry Seed, Violet). Members of Ionone molecules
