Carvedilol
is a combined medicine of Alpha (alpha-adrenoceptor blockers)
and Beta-blockers
(beta-adrenoceptor blockers) capable of blocking both alpha and beta receptors to treat high blood
pressure and to prevent cardiac arrhythmias and angina. Carvedilol is a white to off-white crystalline
powder; soluble in dimethylsulfoxide, methylene chloride,
DMF, methanol; sparingly soluble in ethanol,
isopropanol; slightly soluble in ethyl ether; insoluble in water. Chemically
it is described as (±)-1-(Carbazol-4-yloxy)-3-[[2-(O-methoxyphenoxy)
ethyl] aminol-2-propanol. Examples of alpha-beta combined brokers are carvedilol
and labetalol, alpha-Brokers; alfuzosin, doxazosin, indoramin, phenoxybenzamine, phentolamine, prazosin,
tamsulosin, terazosin, thymoxamine and beta-blockers examples include atenolol, metoprolol, oxprenolol, propranolol (most of the generic names for
beta blockers end with 'olol').
