APPLICATIONS

Lamivudine, an analogue of nucleoside, is an inhibitor of reverse transcriptase used as an antiretroviral agent that inhibits replication of some retroviruses in combination with zidovudine in the management of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) reverse transcriptase and chronic viral hepatitis within cells. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder; melting point 175 - 178 C; soluble in water; administered orally. The chemcial designation is (2R, cis)-4-amino-1-(2-hydroxymethyl-1 ,3-oxathiolan-5-yl)-(1H)- pyrimidin-2-one. Protease inhibitors are the second class of antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV.
