Sertraline is a drug of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) which
inhibit the inactivation of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) by blocking
its absorption in the central nervous system. The hydrochloride of sertraline is
a a white crystalline powder; slightly soluble in water and alcohols (ethanol,
isopropyl alcohol); melting point 246 - 249 C; administered orally. The chemical
designation is
(1S-cis)-4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-N-methyl-1-naphthalenamine
hydrochloride. SSRIs are used to treat depressions and effective for
obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, premenstrual
dysphoric mood disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and
