GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
||
Rhein (1,8-Dihydroxyanthraquinone-3-carboxylic acid) is an anthraquinone-related compound found in several plants especially Rhamnus frangula. It is an enzyme inhibitor that binds to enzymes and decrease their activity, which leads killing a pathogen or correcting a metabolic imbalance. Natural poisons are often enzyme inhibitors that have evolved to defend a plant or animal against predators. Many insecticides (such as malathion), herbicides (glyphosate), and disinfectants (triclosan) are enzyme inhibitors. They are also designed as part of pharmacology and biochemistry to treat disease. They are used as tool in toxicity studies. Diacerein, diester of rhein, is metabolized to active rhein. It is a slow acting symptomatic drug used in the treatment of osteoarthritis by inhibiting interleukin-1 and metalloproteinases. But it has no effect of cyclooxygenase. One of the closely related compound with Rhein is Emodin (1,3,8-Trihydroxy-6-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone). | ||
